● The solo piano work of American jazz pianist Fred Hersch, known as the "Poet of the Piano" for his delicate touch and beautiful melodies, is now available from ECM. Brad Mehldau has said, "If I hadn't studied with Fred, I probably wouldn't be playing the piano today."
● Fred Hersch, who expanded his fanbase with the duo album "Alive At The Village Vanguard" released last year with Esperanza, is releasing his first solo album in four years since "Songs From Home" in 2020. This is also his solo debut album on ECM, which boasts solo piano recordings.
● Features carefully selected standard songs such as Billy Strayhorn's "Star-Crossed Lovers," Sigmund Romberg's "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise," Alec Wilder's "Winter Of My Discontent," and Russ Freeman's "The Wind," along with 7 original songs. The improvisations, unique to ECM, are also a highlight.
● Just as Hersch is versatile and exploratory in trios and duos, his infinite breadth of artistry and emotional diversity are nowhere more apparent than in his breathtaking solo performances. Jazz Times magazine praised his unaccompanied performances as "complete, self-sufficient, and a unique pure art form," and All About Jazz magazine raved, "When it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everyone else."
● Developed with producer Manfred Eicher in the responsive acoustics of Lugano Studio, this album was recorded in May 2023.
● The only previous ECM work Fred Hersch participated in was the duo album "You've Healed Me" with Enrico Rava, released in 2022.
