[Synopsis]
Michael Henchard is a poor farmer, a wanderer without even a home, barely supporting his wife and daughter by working on farms.
One night, while drunk, he auctions off his wife and daughter and sells them to a stranger.
After sobering up, he learns of his actions, vows to abstain from alcohol and work diligently.
He keeps this promise and eventually becomes a respected figure, even being nominated for mayor.
One day, his wife and daughter suddenly reappear...
