Robbie Williams has previously tackled indie rock, big band swing, and flamboyant pop songs. So where is his fifth album taking this popular British entertainer? This album is a complete departure from his previous works, with a serious effort to create numbers that are as accessible as they are reliable. Therefore, you won't hear kid-friendly rock numbers like "Rock DJ" or "Kids." Robbie has grown up and is now producing adult-oriented rock and MOR pop.
"Feel," the first single from this album, is an adult-oriented pop song reminiscent of Phil Collins or David Gray. However, it is saved by Robbie's heartfelt and unique vocals, which may not be the best in the world, but you can tell that every word of the lyrics has meaning. Furthermore, on the album's highlight, the majestic ballad "Love Somebody," he pushes his voice to its limits, perfectly matching it with a backdrop of heavy strings and uplifting gospel choirs.
The ballads on this album are undeniably overwhelming. The heavier rock numbers, which seem to aim for Oasis but end up sounding like Toploader, are finished with a cheap soul touch, full of flamboyant horn sections and pub-rock-style arrangements, making them wonderfully impressive.
Robbie's lyrics are very personal, complaining at length about the struggles of being a pop star ("How Peculiar," "Something Beautiful"). While he has reduced his self-parody to match his new mature style, his sense of humor and ironic perspective shine through in "Handsome Man" and the catchy but silly "Me & My Monkey." One important thing we forgot to mention: the ending song "Nan's Song," which Robbie wrote entirely by himself for the first time, is a simple and deeply moving tribute to his late grandmother. It's certainly not the best track on the album, but perhaps Robbie will be relieved that it fits well on the album and that it's better than Liam Gallagher's first-ever written song.
