Seaweed farming in Mie Prefecture began surprisingly early, during the Meiji era.
The northern part of the prefecture, the Kuwana area, is located in Ise Bay. To the south, seaweed is cultivated in the Toba area and on various islands. Seaweed grown here benefits from the rich nutrients supplied by the Kiso River and the blessings of Ise Bay, resulting in fragrant and sweet seaweed.
