**Protection against evil with Nanten**Nanten, introduced from China during the Heian period, has long been valued as a medicinal plant to suppress coughs.
From late autumn to early winter, it bears glossy red berries, and its name, "Nanten," is read as "difficult to turn" or "nan-ten," symbolizing the wish to "turn misfortune into fortune."
It is also believed to ward off evil spirits when placed at the entrance, acting as a talisman.
An encyclopedia from the Edo period states, "Planting Nanten prevents fires," and many households planted it in inauspicious directions as a fire prevention measure, protecting the safety of the home.
