Nanten is a plant introduced from China during the Heian period, traditionally valued as a medicinal herb to suppress coughs.From late autumn to early winter, it bears glossy red berries, and its name, "Nanten," is read as "difficult to turn" or "nan-ten," symbolizing the wish to "turn difficulties into blessings." It is regarded as an auspicious plant.
Additionally, placing Nanten at the entrance is believed to ward off evil spirits.An encyclopedia from the Edo period states, "Planting Nanten prevents fires," and many households planted it in inauspicious directions as a fire prevention measure, protecting the safety of the home.
