Sandrine Piau, a leading soprano who has gained recognition as a star of baroque opera at theaters across Europe including her homeland France, and who has also achieved a unique track record in modern works including French songs, possesses a transparent and uniquely powerful voice well-suited to early music repertoire. However, this is her first solo collection of Handel pieces in over ten years since her two albums with the NAIVE label! Titled "Enchanting Women," this album features notable numbers centered on distinctive female roles often associated with magic and manipulation, including the tragic Lucretia and Cleopatra from "Julius Caesar in Egypt." As Piau herself states, she aimed to redefine her image from initially light roles to powerful women willing to do anything for their goals, even murder. The ensemble Les Parfaits, led by Jérôme Correas, who is also a baroque opera conductor and a period instrument specialist, participates with a string ensemble of 4/3/3/3/1 plus occasional oboes and trumpets. Their rich, deep sound beautifully supports the solo performances and creates a vivid, shadowed sound characteristic of French baroque music. From hits like "Cry for my fate" and "Please make me cry," to deeply immersive interpretations that deepen with each listen, this new anthology is a dense, exquisite addition to Handel’s repertoire.
