This is a masterpiece showcasing the brilliance of young talent! Leader and pianist Ayaka Toyohide is increasingly active in performances centered in Tokyo, and her name is being seen more often. This is Toyohide's first album! Saxophonist Akane Ezawe delivers refreshing, straightforward performances rooted in the mainstream of jazz. She already has a leader album, "Thaw (Cadenza)," and is a rising star who doesn't need to be labeled as young or female. Bassist Hajime Teshima boasts excellent tempo control and intonation, with occasional splashes of passion erupting from his absolute stability. The youngest member, Hayato Yamazaki, is a naturally gifted genius who is almost entirely self-taught yet constantly in demand!
"Haru no Nami" (Spring Waves), an original composition by Toyohide, which you'll hear at the beginning, features experimental sounds while exuding an oriental charm. The title track, "Sorekara" (And Then), also an original, is lyrical and encapsulates Toyohide's talent as an artist.
"Donna Lee" and "If I Should Lose You," famous for Charlie Parker's performances, are played with a good inheritance of jazz DNA while firmly asserting their own individuality. "Waltz for Debby" surprises with its unique background. "Recorda-Me" highlights Yamazaki's drumming. "For Heaven's Sake," the only ballad, features Teshima's bass.
"Holy Land," composed by pianist Cedar Walton, is tackled by the trio, allowing you to fully enjoy Toyohide's hard-bop style. Mariya Takeuchi's "Eki" (Station), likely a classic from the members' parents' generation, is played at an uptempo with a mellow atmosphere, and Ezawe's soprano sax is poignant. This is a truly brilliant album where the 100-year tradition of jazz coexists with a fresh sensibility that repels water! Also, the liner notes are passionate.
