Typically, Japanese manhole covers start their life in a fascinating way through a method called sand casting. First, a sand mold is crafted in the exact design desired. This mold is then filled with molten iron.

Once the iron cools and sets, the sand mold is broken apart to reveal the newly formed manhole cover. These aren't just left as-is, though—they're carefully refined, given a protective coat to ward off rust and corrosion, and often painted in vivid colors that make the designs pop, much like decorating a cake with icing.

Before these artistic covers hit the streets, they undergo a rigorous water pressure test to ensure they're ready for duty!
