“Monthly Playboy” (Gekkan Playboy) was a magazine that, in the past, translated and re-edited the U.S. adult magazine “Playboy” for a Japanese audience.

It is also known as the Japanese edition of PLAYBOY.

Shueisha launched it in May 1975 as the “July issue.”

The publisher was Tadashi Wakana, and the editor-in-chief was Boku Okada.

It also featured a rich selection of reading material, including non-fiction by Norman Mailer and novels by John Collier.

It directly imported and published nude photos of “Playmates,” the exclusive models for *Playboy*.

Even before the ban on full-frontal nudity was lifted in Japan (around 1990), the magazine continued to publish such content, albeit with some retouching and editing.

Aside from the photo spreads, the Japanese edition had a strong unique identity, featuring novels, columns, and interview articles.

Kazuhiko Torishima, who joined Shueisha with the goal of becoming an editor for the magazine, stated, “The content was very interesting, including its promotional strategies.”

The influence of its unique approach—featuring stylish layout design and sophisticated articles—was significant; since its launch, a succession of adult-oriented visual magazines modeled after *Monthly Playboy* were launched.
