未発表曲を含むScreen Prints復刻作が、遂にアナログLPリリース！
Screen Printsはダービー出身のDeclanとJustinを中心に結成、マンチェスターで名レコードショップ、Vinyl Exchangeを経営するRichardとAlunが加入し、4人組として活動をスタートさせる。90年代後半～00年初頭にはEarworm (UK) やTrack & Field (UK)、Motorway (JAPAN) などから作品をリリースしていた。2000年にリリースされたマンチェスターの総合病院の宿舎で録音された楽曲を収めた編集盤『Perfect City』は、彼らの敬愛するFelt、The PastelsやMy Bloody Valentine、Teenage Fanclubなどの当時のコンテンポラリーなバンドやThe Beach Boys、The Zombies、Big Starなどのソフトロック、ノーザン・ソウル、ジャマイカン・ダブなどにインスパイアされた一筋縄ではいかない音楽センスとツイン・リバーブやモーグ・シンセのヴィンテージ・サウンド、そして研ぎすまされた美しいメロディで織りなす名曲の数々は当時ネオアコ～ギター・ポップ・ファンの間でリリースの度に話題となった。
本作『Hum And Hiss』は当時4トラックのMTRに録音された音源を集めた『Perfect City』収録曲と、次の作品のために残していたがリリースされずであった未発表曲にメンバー自身がリマスターを施した全14曲入りリマスター・アルバム。A2「Willow Kiss」はため息が出るようなブレイクを持つ、どこかサニーデイ・サービス『東京』のような温かな焦燥感を持った幻の未発表曲。The Zombiesハーモニーとバレアリックなギターが浮遊するA3「Autumnal Playing Fields」、7インチ・シングルとしてリリースされたA4「Same Time Next Year」は甘酸っぱいノーザン・ソウル・フレイバーでリリース当時日本でも7インチがヒット。そしてJohn Peelが当時エアプレイしたBig Star～Mazzy Starな寂寥バラードB2「Her Name I Don't Remember」、轟音ギターと甘酸っぱいコーラスで心を掻きむしるインディー・ロックB4「Perfect City」など、全体にどこか儚げで、冬の気配が漂う英国ギター・ポップの素晴らしさ溢れるサウンド。
Fastcutレーベル悲願のリリースであり、Screen Printsを無くしてはレーベルも無かったと断言できるバンド。キラキラとしたギター・ポップの中にも、どこか苦悩や挫折を感じさせる陰影を帯びたトーンが見え隠れする、裏Fantastic Somethingと呼びたいUKギター・ポップ最良の風景を感じさせる作品です。[歌詞・対訳付き]
