エルサレム交響楽団の首席チェロ奏者、および世界的ソリストとして活躍するイナ=エスター・ユースト・ベン=サッソンの弾く味わい深いフォーレのチェロ作品集です。彼女はフルニエに学び、ベルグラード国際チェロ・コンクールで優勝し、チェリビダッケを始めとした大指揮者とも数多く共演しています。フォーレ(1845-1924)の2曲のチェロ・ソナタはどちらも晩年に書かれた独特の渋い魅力を放つ作品として知られます。時は20世紀に入り、もともと緩やかだったフォーレの調性感はいよいよ希薄となり、その響きは水面を反射する光のように移ろっていきます。彼女はそんな繊細な流れを的確に捉え、流麗さを損なうことなく淡々と音にしていくのです。良く知られた「夢のあとに」などの初期の作品の編曲集はまた違った味わいがあり、こちらもフォーレの音楽を聴く喜びに浸れます。
