About 400 years ago, there was a person named Suzuki Miemon in the southern fortress town of Shiroishi, within the Sendai domain of Date Masamune's territory. His father suffered from stomach illness and had to fast for several days. By chance, he learned the method of hand-stretched noodles without using oil from a traveling monk, and when he made and fed these noodles to his father, his stomach ailment was instantly cured. The lord of Shiroishi Castle, Katakura Kojuro, appreciated this warm act of filial piety and named the noodles "Onmen (Uumen)". Miemon spread the method of making these warm noodles among the people of Shiroishi Castle, and they are now widely known throughout Japan as a specialty noodle from Miyagi and Shiroishi.
