クロレラは淡水で育つ単細胞緑藻のひとつ。1890年、クロレラを発見した微生物学者により、ギリシャ語とラテン語をあわせた「緑色＋小さい」という意味の造語で名づけられました。
クロレラは小さな球形で、細胞中のクロロフィル（葉緑素）により緑色に見えます。太陽の光・清浄な水・澄み切った空気という成長環境の条件がそろえば、驚異的な速さで繁殖します。
繁殖は、「成長ー円熟ー完成ー分裂」の4段階で、1つの細胞から4ー8個の娘細胞に分裂します。しかもそのサイクルは24時間、驚異的なスピードで増殖します。単一の細胞（ひとつのクロレラ）には、アミノ酸組成の優れた大量のタンパク質、人間の生命・健康維持に欠かせない必須アミノ酸８種類、各種ビタミン、ミネラル、葉緑素類など数多くの栄養素をバランスよく持ち合わせています。
